A wet belt does the same basic job as a timing belt, keeping your engine’s components running in sync, but it sits inside the engine and runs submerged in oil rather than outside in open air. It’s a design used on certain modern petrol engines, including some Ford and PSA Group models, and it comes with its own set of risks that many drivers aren’t aware of until something goes wrong.

What makes a wet belt different

Traditional timing belts run dry, outside the engine, where they can be inspected and are designed to last a long time between replacements. A wet belt sits inside the engine block, bathed in oil. Over time, the belt material can start to break down in that environment, shedding small pieces of rubber that circulate through the oil system.

Why wet belts cause problems

The debris shed by a degrading wet belt can block the engine’s oil pickup or oil pump, starving the engine of lubrication. Because this happens gradually and out of sight, many drivers get no warning at all before serious engine damage occurs, sometimes resulting in the need for a full engine replacement.

Is my car affected?

Wet belts have been fitted to a number of small capacity petrol engines from certain manufacturers over recent years, including some three cylinder Ford EcoBoost engines and PSA Group PureTech engines used across various Peugeot, Citroen, and Vauxhall models. Signs to watch for

Wet belt failure often gives little or no warning, which is why prevention matters more than symptoms. That said, be aware of:
